The Sabarkantha District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd. was established in the year 1964 by collecting raw milk from 19 primary co-operative milk societies and supplying it unprocessed to Ahmedabad Municipal Dairy. Municipal Dairy, being a consumer-oriented dairy, could not accept more milk during the flush season. This forced the Union to rotationally stop the milk collection from societies during the flush season. The milk union could not expand its activities for the first seven years due to inadequate financial resources.
In the year 1971 under Operation Flood-I Programme of the Indian Dairy Corporation (a Government of India undertaking), a dairy project was sanctioned for handling 1.50 lakh liters of milk per day. The total cost of the dairy plant was Rs.2.52 crore, which was received from the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation through the Government of Gujarat. Turnover for the year 2020-2021 was 5710.36 Rs (Crores).
The farmers own the Dairy, their elected representatives manage the Village Societies and the District Union. They employ professionals to operate the dairy and manage its business. The diary aims to provide remunerative returns to the milk producers and serve the interest of Indian consumers by providing quality milk products through Federation - M/s Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited. They are an ISO-22000 & ISO-9011 certified institution.
The Plant visit has surely enriched students’ knowledge regarding the production process, packaging process, quality maintenance and assurance of different dairy products. The plant in charge also shared details about the supply chain and logistics of the products manufactured and various functional departments and respective role in the operations of the dairy. Sabar dairy majorly deals with Milk, Curd, Buttermilk, Paneer etc. products and is planning to introduce Cheese and related products soon, for which the plant setup is already being made. As they are part of a cooperative society, they distribute their profits to each and every senator/member every year. They have got a separate Education department that conducts and coordinates such visits of the educational institutes. This is highly appreciated as it encourages educational institutes to conduct the industrial visit smoothly.
