LJ Prayas
LJ Prayas
Prayas is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that primarily dedicates its efforts to the education of underprivileged children, offering them opportunities to secure a brighter future. Established on March 23, 2008, by students of LJIET under the guidance of Prof. Sushma Jacob from LJIMS, with the backing of the college management, Prayas focuses on nurturing and educating underprivileged children. Beyond academics, Prayas emphasizes extracurricular activities and instills moral values in its students.
The inception of Prayas was inspired by a random incident where three girls from an engineering institute noticed children near the college outskirts lacking essential educational facilities. Driven by the idea that every child deserves quality education, the girls discussed their plan with their communication skills faculty, Prof. Sushma Jacob. The faculty endorsed the idea, and the students presented it to the college management, who appreciated it and provided the necessary resources. Thus, Prayas was initiated, with students from LJIET voluntarily contributing their time and efforts to support the cause.
The Prayas team, comprising LJIET students, dedicates an hour daily before college to teach these underprivileged children. Progress reports for each child are maintained and shared during parent-teacher meetings, where academics and overall development are discussed. Additionally, Prayas children are introduced to basic computer and technology skills in the computer labs of LJIET.
Recognizing the importance of a balanced approach to education, Prayas provides opportunities for the kids to showcase their talents in LJ's cult-fest "Lumina." Special events, such as a sports day, are organized for the physical development of Prayas children, with the support of the college management and Prayas team.
Prayas ensures that the children celebrate various festivals with joy and enlightenment, adhering to Indian traditions. For the past 12 years, thanks to the support and appreciation of the college management and the consistent efforts of its volunteers, Prayas has been making a meaningful contribution to the upbringing and education of underprivileged children.
